The Ford Escort Mk3 and Mk4 share the same basic structure and represent the transition from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive for Fords European compact car. The Mk3 launched in 1980 with the new CVH engine range and a modern aerodynamic body. The XR3 and later XR3i brought genuine performance credibility to the range. The RS Turbo, launched in 1984, became one of the most desirable hot hatches of the 1980s with its turbocharged CVH engine and limited-slip differential. The Mk4 facelift arrived in 1986 with revised styling and improved injection systems. Both generations are straightforward to work on with excellent parts availability. Rust in the rear wheel arches, sills and floor is the primary concern.
