Coolant loss, white smoke, and overheating on the Nissan Navara D40 with the 2.5 dCi YD25DDTi engine. This is one of the most widely reported faults on the Navara D40 — the aluminium cylinder head is prone to cracking between the valve seats, particularly in hot climates and in vehicles used for heavy towing. Nissan settled class action lawsuits in multiple countries. The repair requires head replacement with the updated specification head. Prevention: avoid sustained maximum load towing in high ambient temperatures.

⚙️ Possible Causes

🧾 Driver Reports

✅ Fixed Nissan dealer covered it under goodwill at 85k

Took it to Nissan dealer when symptoms started — white smoke, slight coolant loss. They knew exactly what it was immediately. Got 50% goodwill contribution toward the repair even out of warranty because it's such a known issue. Worth asking Nissan directly before paying full whack.

Parts replaced: Head replacement (partial dealer contribution)

✅ Fixed Prevention — EGR delete and coolant flush on early signs

Bought mine knowing about this issue. Did a coolant flush, EGR delete (blanking plate) and fitted an oil cooler thermostat delete straight away. 40k miles since and no issues. The cracking is linked to heat cycling — keeping the EGR clean and coolant fresh reduces the risk significantly.

Parts replaced: EGR blanking plate, coolant, thermostat delete kit

✅ Fixed Cracked head confirmed — reconditioned head fitted

White smoke, coolant loss, mayo in oil. Classic D40 YD25 cracked head. This is a known issue on these engines. Reconditioned head from specialist who had modified the head to address the original weakness. £900 fitted. Had the injectors serviced at same time. Running well 20k miles on.

Parts replaced: Reconditioned cylinder head (uprated), head gasket set, injector service
