The oil pressure warning light (usually red) indicates dangerously low oil pressure reaching the engine bearings. This is a critical fault — stop the engine immediately if this light illuminates while driving. Check the oil level first. If level is correct, the oil pump, pressure relief valve, or oil galleries may be blocked. Continuing to drive with low oil pressure will destroy main bearings and connecting rod bearings within minutes, requiring a full engine rebuild or replacement.

✅ FixedOil pump failure at 140k — expensive but caught in time
Light flickered at idle when warm, then stayed on. Oil level was fine. Took it straight to the garage — good job I did. Actual pressure was only 0.8 bar at idle, should be minimum 1.5. Oil pump had worn out internally. £480 all in for pump, gaskets, fresh oil and filter. Not cheap but a lot cheaper than a new engine. The mechanic said another few hundred miles and the mains would have gone.

✅ FixedPressure sensor was the culprit, not actual low pressure
Oil level was fine so I was worried. My mate who's a mechanic tested actual pressure with a gauge he borrowed — pressure was completely normal. Replaced the oil pressure switch for £18 from a motor factor. Job done in 20 minutes. The sensor just fails on these engines around 80-100k miles, gives a false reading. Don't panic if your oil level is correct.
Light came on doing 60 on the motorway. Pulled over straight away, turned engine off. Checked the dipstick — bone dry, nothing on it at all. Hadn't checked oil in about 8 months which was stupid. Put 2 litres of 5W30 in, started it up and the light went off. Been fine since. Lesson learned — check your oil every month.
