The central touchscreen becomes unresponsive, freezes, or fails to boot. On pre-2021 Model 3 vehicles the Media Control Unit (MCU1) uses an eMMC storage chip that wears out from continuous data logging. Tesla extended the warranty on MCU1 after regulatory pressure and offers MCU1-to-MCU2 upgrades. A soft reboot (hold both scroll wheels) resolves temporary freezes. Permanent failure requires MCU replacement by a Tesla service centre.
