Timing chain failure has been reported on N47-engined BMW 1 Series with as little as 60,000 miles. The rear-mounted chain and plastic guides degrade regardless of mileage if the engine oil is not changed frequently. BMW lost multiple court cases in the UK and Europe over this fault. Owners should change oil every 6,000 miles maximum and have the chain tension inspected at every service. The repair cost exceeds the value of many affected cars.
