Opel Astra K 1.4 Turbo timing chain tensioner failure
Rattling noise from the engine on cold start on the Opel Astra K 1.4 Turbo (B14NET engine). The timing chain tensioner on this engine is hydraulically operated and loses pressure when the oil is degraded. Using 5W-30 fully synthetic oil and changing every 10,000 km significantly reduces the risk. If the noise persists beyond 5 seconds after start, the tensioner and chain guides require inspection. This engine is shared with Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Verano.
