The Mazda3 Mk4 with the SkyActiv-X engine (SPCCI — Spark Plug Controlled Compression Ignition) can develop lean misfires, particularly during cold starts and in very hot weather. The SkyActiv-X is a complex hybrid petrol-compression ignition system sensitive to fuel quality and air intake temperature. Using 95 RON or higher fuel is essential. A software update from Mazda addresses cold-start calibration. The engine requires dealer-level diagnostics — generic OBD tools do not fully decode SkyActiv-X fault codes.
