The electric water pump fitted to BMW N20, N52, N55 and similar engines fails and causes overheating. No warning until temperature gauge rises. This fault code is stored when the engine control unit detects a specific fault condition. Common causes include sensor failures, wiring faults, and component wear. Always read additional fault codes before replacing parts — multiple codes together provide a clearer diagnosis. Clear the code after repair and test drive to confirm the fault does not return.

Temperature gauge shot up suddenly on the motorway. Pulled over. Electric water pump had failed completely with no prior warning. Recovered to garage, new pump and thermostat, full coolant flush. £420. These pumps don't give much warning — replace preventively at 80k.

✅ Fixed Electric water pump replaced at 75k preventively

Replaced the electric water pump and thermostat at 75,000 miles on my N52. Both are known failure items. The old pump was still working but the impeller blades were showing wear. Glad I did it proactively — peace of mind on long journeys.
