The Ford PowerShift dual clutch transmission shudders on pull-away and hesitates during low-speed manoeuvring. This fault affected millions of Ford Focus and Fiesta models worldwide and led to multiple class action lawsuits. A TCU software update provides partial improvement but does not eliminate the fundamental design issue with the wet clutch design at low speeds. Many owners required repeated clutch replacements under warranty.

✅ FixedSold it and bought a manual — best decision
After two clutch replacements in 3 years I gave up. Part-exchanged for a manual gearbox Focus. No more shudder, no more anxiety about whether it'll get worse. The PowerShift is a fundamentally flawed design for city driving. If you're buying a Focus, get the manual.

🟡 Partially FixedClutch pack replacement — only lasted 18 months
Had the clutch pack replaced under extended warranty. Shudder went away completely. Came back 18 months later. This is a design flaw not a wear issue — the dry clutch design is not suited to stop-start traffic. Ford eventually offered buybacks on some cars. If still in warranty push for that.
Shudder on light throttle from low speed. Ford dealer did a TCM (transmission control module) software update as part of the class action settlement. Shudder noticeably reduced though not 100% gone. Better than it was. Check if your VIN is covered by the Ford settlement.
