Ford Transit with 2.2 or 2.0 TDCi enters limp mode with EGR-related fault codes. Very common on high-mileage Transit fleet vehicles. This fault code is stored when the engine control unit detects a specific fault condition. Common causes include sensor failures, wiring faults, and component wear. Always read additional fault codes before replacing parts — multiple codes together provide a clearer diagnosis. Clear the code after repair and test drive to confirm the fault does not return.

🧾 Driver Reports

✅ Fixed New EGR valve after cleaning failed within 3 months

Cleaned the EGR valve and it was fine for 3 months then blocked up again. This engine produces so much carbon deposit that cleaning is just a temporary fix if you do short runs. Fitted a new EGR valve and changed driving habits — longer runs weekly. Been fine for 8 months.

✅ Fixed EGR valve cleaned — came out solid with carbon

Transit in limp mode, EGR fault code. Removed the EGR valve — it was almost completely blocked with hardened carbon, barely any opening at all. Cleaned it with EGR cleaner spray and a wire brush. Took about an hour. Cleared the codes, no limp mode since. Save yourself £300 and try cleaning first.
